Memory Lane

Lyrics

Out on a jaunt
Seeing the hindsights
Frequenting haunts
We spent divine nights
Feeling the joy and the pain
It’s memory lane

Stop at the light
Don’t ask directions
You know the way
You lost her affections
Singing the same refrain
Down memory lane

You know the concierge
Of that auberge
Still gave me a stare

And that hotel room
Ain’t seen a broom
Since we were both there

Deep in the country
Breathing the clean air
Sharing a Winston
We made a fine pair
Scrubbing that old wine stain
Off memory lane

A thousand reflections
Pass on the highway
Painful dissections
Of what we could not say
Bumper to bumper again
It’s memory lane
…exit 10 off memory lane
…oh, memory lane

Song Notes

Long before I started writing songs I loved Peter’s writing and loved talking to him about writing and looked for ways for us to write together. After I started writing songs, Peter told me he had a whole collection of lyrics and that I was welcome to set any of them to music. I can imagine a different record built entirely around those songs. In fact, I’ve already suggested to David that once this album is done we collaborate on setting another of Peter’s lyrics — “I Love You Forever (But I Hate You Today)” — to music.

This one just jumped out at me. The words brought a melody, a rhythm, and a vaudeville style to my mind, somewhere between Stephen Foster and the Andrews sisters. The music practically wrote itself. The production was a pleasure, and in the end we decided this would be a good way to kick off the second side of songs.
