Lyrics for “Memory Lane

Notes

Outside of blood relations, Peter is the writer I’ve known longest. A classmate of my youngest brother for many years, Peter came out west for a brief sunny season in the before-fore and we had deep and mutually engaging conversations about writing and art and collaboration.

My own trips back to New York involved connecting with Peter (and, whenever possible, Cusi) along with my family and a few other treasured friends. We continued to talk about somehow working together on something.

When I told Peter I had started writing songs he told me he had a whole stack of lyrics and that I was welcome to any of them. They’re fantastic! There are many more. At least a whole album’s worth.

“Memory Lane” was so fully realized on the page that I could hear the music in my head when I was reading it. Even the bridge just fell into place when it was needed. Peter sang it to me once into the phone machine and that just encouraged me further. Sometimes I imagined the Andrews Sisters singing it, or Rudy Vallée.

What a joy to make something with Peter, and to share it back to him on this record!

Oh, and he gets all the references on “Carnegie Hill.”
