Notes
When I got to the studio, Myles was assembling his pedal steel guitar after removing the parts from their traveling case. Just watching him put it together and start playing. Watching him work the pedal steel and the lap steel, and even add them both to one of the more elaborately arranged songs (“Moses Took Us to the Water”) was a treat in and of itself.
Discussing how to approach these songs, evolving from the initial “sacred steel” concept to something more ethereal on “Down to the Mountain,” for example, and just watching and hearing Myles play, experimenting with ideas and making those incredible harmonics soar, well that was by far one of the highlights of recording this record.
It’s his C13 (or is it a C9? I should check) chord voicing that lingers at the end of this album, never fully resolved, like so many things in life.
